Scale – How to determine

scale comparison by circles

Definition of scale  – Scale is the size of one object in relation to the other objects.

What if i said that the middle circle is equal in both the images below.

Would you believe me? I know you would not. Tell you what even to me the middle circle in the right image looks smaller.

So lets confirm it!!!!

Oh my God!! Can you believe the circles are equal size. The lines joining the two circles are absolutely straight and parallel to each other. Yet even now the left one appears bigger than the right one.

This, my friends explains the power of scale!!!!!!!!

Now lets see how it relates to our dressing.

  1. Left picture: Imagine that the circle in the middle (in blue) is a girl’s body scale. When she wears clothes that have very small scale, in comparison her body looks huge.
  2. Right picture: Again image that the middle circle (in blue) is a girl’s body scale. When she wears clothes that have very large scale, in comparison her body looks extremely small.

As is clear from the images, disproportional scale is not pleasing and can alter your size. Now lets try with similar scale circles.

How do you determine your scale- Based on the below three parameters you can determine your overall scale-

Features
1. Height Below 5 feet 5.1 feet to 5. 5 feet Above 5.5 feet
2.  Usual clothing size XS and S M L, XL, XXL
3. Facial features Small scale Medium scale Large scale
Overall body scale would be Small Medium Large
Suggested clothes scale Small & Medium Medium & Large Large & Extra large

Hence is suggested that you go similar scale or one scale larger in clothes to look slimmer.

In case all the three features are not in the same scale, go with the majority. Eg.

Example 1
1. Height Small (below 5 feet)
2. Usual clothing size Small
3. Facial features Small scale

Recommended Clothing design scale would be small

Example 2
1. Height Small (below 5 feet)
2. Usual clothing size Medium
3. Facial features Medium scale

Recommended Clothing design scale would be Medium

Notice that this lady with medium scale is looking overwhelmed (or may be I could say undernourished) by the extra large scale design on her clothing. (Her height is medium scale, clothing size is small scale and her facial features are medium scale hence overall she has a small to medium scale hence should avoid extra large scale clothing.)

Small scaled clothing –

small scale

Medium scaled clothing-

Medium scale

In the second and third shirt, small flowers are arranged in clusters with blank spaces in between the clusters. From a distance the clustered flowers appear to be one large flower hence shirts become medium scaled.

Large and extra large scale clothing –

Large and extra large scale

Notice that in second picture, extra large print is looking odd on the medium scale girl.

Again in the third picture, the cluster of medium scaled flowers together makes it a large scale print (which is looking good on a medium scaled Kaley).

Someone with a smaller scale but with a large facial feature – eyes or nose or lips or ears would not look good in smaller scale clothes. Their large feature (eyes or nose or lips or ears) would look even bigger relative to small scaled clothing.

Body scale_clothing scale

The actress here is small in height with a large clothing size and a pronounced facial feature i.e. her nose. When she dresses in small scale dresses her nose and her body structure looks even bigger.
